Patio Base Work and Retaining Walls Done Right

A good patio doesn't start with the flagstone - it starts way below it. This customer had big plans for their backyard: a flagstone patio with a pergola. They were ready to tackle the flagstone install themselves, which we were totally on board with. Our job was to make sure everything underneath was dialed in before they got started.

Here's what that looked like on our end: base gravel compacted and leveled across the patio area, retaining walls built using tumbled bluestone wallstone to hold the grade and define the space, and footings dug and set for the pergola posts. Every one of those pieces has to be right, or the whole thing is a headache down the road.

The tumbled bluestone we used for the retaining walls gives that natural, worn-in look that pairs really well with flagstone. It's not the kind of material that fights for attention - it just fits. And because it's tumbled, the edges are softened and the finish blends naturally into the landscape.

Getting the pergola footings level was a big focus for us on this one. A pergola that's even slightly off can cause issues with the structure over time, so we took our time measuring and setting those correctly. It's one of those details that isn't glamorous, but it matters a lot.

This kind of work - the base prep, the stonework, the leveled footings - is exactly what we do. Sometimes the best thing we can do for a customer is set them up to finish the job themselves with confidence. That's what we aimed for here.
