Most people do not think about watering a planting bed until something starts dying. By then you have either been hand-watering on a schedule nobody can keep up with, or you have watched plants slowly stress through the dry months.
Drip irrigation solves that quietly, and once it is in you barely notice it is there. The tubing runs along the soil at the base of each plant and delivers water exactly where it needs to go. No overspray, nothing wasted on paving or running off. Slow, steady moisture reaching the root zone.
One thing worth knowing about drip is how accessible it is at almost any budget. Where there is no existing irrigation controller, we can run it off a battery-operated timer at the hose bib. That handles the scheduling automatically, so nobody has to remember, and it keeps the installation cost down because there is no tie-in to a larger installation.
It suits mixed beds like this one particularly well: shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials, all with different spacing and different water needs. We route the mainline through the bed and use individual emitters at each plant. Low profile, and once the mulch goes back down it practically disappears.
Drip is one of those upgrades that simply makes sense. The planting stays healthier, you use less water, and you stop spending August dragging a hose around.
