A water feature changes what a garden sounds like. That is most of the point. Moving water covers traffic and neighbour noise in a way that planting and fencing cannot, and it turns an unused corner into somewhere people sit.

It also brings birds. On a city lot that is a bigger daily pleasure than most people anticipate.

What we build

Basin fountains. A recirculating reservoir buried under gravel with a stone or vessel above it. No standing water, nothing to fall into, very little maintenance, and it gives you the sound in a garden with no room for anything larger. This is the right answer far more often than people expect.

Ponds. Lined, with the depth, edge treatment and marginal planting worked out together. Depth matters for temperature stability and for whether the feature can hold fish. Edges are where ponds usually look wrong, so the liner has to disappear properly rather than sit visible under a ring of rocks.

Streams and dry streams. A run of water through a slope, often paired with the drainage work that a sloping property needed anyway. On a site where the drainage is the actual problem, a stream can be the visible half of the solution.

Wall and spill features. Water over a face into a basin. Suits a courtyard or a contemporary setting where a pond would read as out of place.

Built to keep working

Recirculating rather than fed from the tap. Pump sized to the head height and the run rather than to the price. Power routed safely and buried at a sensible depth. Skimmer and filter positioned where somebody can actually reach them, because a filter that is awkward to service stops being serviced.

In a hard freeze the pump comes out or the feature drains down. That is designed in from the start rather than discovered in January.

Maintenance

We can keep it on a recurring visit, which is what most clients with a pond end up doing. Skimmer and filter, pump check, marginal planting cut back in season, and the water level watched through August.

Common questions

How much maintenance does a pond need?

A pond asks for a bit of attention, and rather less than people fear. Skimmer and filter cleaning, seasonal cutting back of marginal planting, and a check on the pump. We can carry it on a recurring visit.

Do water features attract mosquitoes?

Moving water does not. Mosquitoes need still water, so a working pump is the control. A feature that has been switched off for a month is a different matter.

Can one go in a small garden?

Yes, and a basin fountain is usually the right choice. It gives you the sound without the surface area, the depth or the safety question.

Do they run in winter?

Most do. In a hard freeze the pump comes out or the feature is drained down, which is straightforward to build into the design from the start.
